I have frequently seen the statement that stroke is the number one source
of disability in the US.
A search of the WEB does not support that statement.
Stroke appears to be a primary, but not #1 source of disability

What are the most common types of disability in the U.S.?
From 1992 National Health Interview Survey,
1) Heart disease, ( 7.9 million)= 13% of all disability reported.
2) Back problems rank second (7.7 million),
3) Arthritis (5.7 million),
4) Orthopedic impairments of lower extremity (2.8 million)
5&6) Asthma and diabetes (2.6 million each).
7) Mental disorders rank (2.0 million),
8) Disorders of the eye (not including visual impairments)
9/10) Learning disabilities/mental retardation (1.6 million each).
11/12) Cancer and visual impairments each limit 1.3 million Americans
13/14) Orthopedic impairments of the shoulder and/or upper extremity limit 1.2 million.
15) Hearing impairments affect 1.2 million in the U.S.
