Gates: Global Health Program Guidelines

   http://www.gatesfoundation.org/globalhealth/guidelines.htm    as of 9/3/00

The Foundation believes a proactive, major-project approach provides the best opportunities for long-term improvements in the health of the world's most vulnerable populations. Our giving strategy is to develop partnerships with established organizations with a proven track record of visionary leadership and effective implementation. The Foundation awards substantial grants to key organizations, who in turn direct the use of the funds to meet strategic objectives.

The Global Health Program provides funding in three priority areas:
    Vaccine Preventable Disease
    Reproductive and Child Health
    Conditions Associated with Poverty.

Organizations working within one of our three priority areas may submit a two-page Letter of Inquiry.
Please note that the Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.

Initiatives selected for funding will be those which, to the greatest extent possible:
o     Address important disease burdens in the poorest countries;
o     Offer an opportunity to achieve leverage, catalyzing a larger response or mobilizing new resources to improve health;
o     Form creative partnerships or coalitions to achieve project objectives;
o     Have global relevance or provide results which transcend any country or regional focus;
o     Result in measurable benefits to impoverished groups;
o     Focus on interventions with high potential cost-effectiveness; and,
o     Ensure broad dissemination and utilization of results and lessons learned.

Current priorities do not include the following:
o     Construction or procurement of equipment for health facilities or research laboratories;
o     Endowments or core funding to support institutions;
o     Support for recurrent costs of personnel or health service delivery;
o     Interventions that will provide substantial or earlier health benefits for industrialized countries; and
o     Support for ongoing programs.
